Google's new privateness coverage, which successfully puts
your entire information from its varied purposes into the identical pot, has not met with
common approval. In Washington lawmakers have been asking some
tough questions, and today an EU data safety committee
has known as on Google to "pause" the brand new coverage while its implications are thought of.
But essentially the most vociferous - and expensive -
marketing campaign in opposition to the coverage has come from Microsoft,
another know-how agency that makes in depth use of personal knowledge.
The company took out massive adverts in American newspapers this week, suggesting that Google was accumulating more and more information about its users to
be able to make ever more cash from advertisers. This was adopted up with
a YouTube video featuring "Gmail Man", who serves
a lady with an advert for an ointment after studying her
e mail and spotting the key phrases "burning" and "sensation".
Google, shock shock, is furious about this marketing campaign, and claims that Microsoft is telling untruths about its policies while being less than frank about its personal.
Microsoft says, although, that its Hotmail service does not examine keywords
for focused advertising in the way that Gmail does, and
doesn't use data from one service to target advertising in one other.
Google responds by pointing out that Gmail has
been doing the same thing since 2004 and has always made it clear.
Google feels that on a key difficulty for its industry like privacy, the online giants should communicate
to the regulators with a united voice reasonably than making trouble for one another.
That may be unrealistic. Microsoft feels that Google has no right
to complain about hostile adverts, given the money
it has poured into its own "Go Google" advertisements lately.
And, having suffered in the regulatory spotlight for years, it seems to be
enjoying the truth that Google has now become the goal
on points starting from privateness to competitors.
I can't assist noticing that a PR firm known as Burson Marsteller sends me an e mail now and again about
some incident displaying Google in a bad light.
They are, after all, employed by Microsoft.
It could also be unseemly, but the battle of words between Microsoft and Google seems to
be sure to supply plenty of entertainment for onlookers.
And, for all of the peace and love streaming out of Google's Californian headquarters, they
aren't above a little bit of preventing discuss themselves.
Microsoft did not really have an online enterprise to speak of right now. |
